Islam is the world's second largest religion after Christianity, with more than 1.8 billion adherents globally-nearly a quarter of the global population. According to statistics published by National Immigration Administration of Ministry of The Interior, currently there are half a million foreign nationals legally residing in Taiwan. Among that half a million legitimate foreign nationals, 40% are Indonesians, becoming an inseparable part of Taiwan society and an important source of foreign caregivers rendering help to seniors and hospitalized patients in Taiwan. To assure Muslim friends seeking care or working here that their faith will be duly respected and their religious practice needs will be properly addressed, International Medical Service Center (IMSC) of TSGH organized and instituted the hospital's “Muslim Prayer Room”, making TSGH the first medical center in Taipei City certified by the Taipei-based Chinese Muslim Association as a Muslim Friendly Environment. The Muslim friendly environment certificate awarding & Muslim prayer room unveiling ceremony was held in front of the hospital's newly constructed “Muslim Prayer Room” located on the 4th floor of TSGH’s main medical building on Oct. 15th, 2020, with Secretary General Chao-Yan, MA of Chinese Muslim Association bestowing the “Muslim Friendly Environment” certificate to Superintendent Chih-Hung, WANG of TSGH. The certificate awarding & prayer room unveiling ceremony was witnessed by Mr. Budi SANTOSO of Indonesian Economic and Trade Office to Taipei, Executive Director Guo-Chang, MA of Chinese Muslim Association, Ms. Eka ROSMINA representing Indonesian caregivers working in TSGH, Executive Deputy Superintendent Jing-Liang, HE of TSGH, and Deputy Superintendent Jia-Jun, WU of TSGH, among other guests of honor and senior medical leaders of TSGH. The newly unveiled Muslim prayer room will offer Muslim patients and caregivers not only a diversified place for worship but also spiritual consolation and a peace of mind during their stay in the hospital.

TSGH's newly instituted Muslim prayer room is located in an area in-between Ward 42nd and Ward 43rd, a spot right in the center of the main medical building. Although the Muslim prayer room's floor space occupies only 4.2 pings (14 square meters), it is equipped with all necessary facilities and amenities, including pre-prayer ablution space and facilities, Islamic prayer rug, the holy book of Koran, prayer robes for male and female Muslims, a screen for separating male and female worshipers, stickers indicating qibla or direction towards Mecca, and a schedule identifying Salat times. TSGH's Muslim prayer room is designed and equipped for the convenience of Muslims and to facilitate their worship of Allah. TSGH is a military hospital which tends to be associated with a sense of seriousness and solemnness. Nevertheless, out of respect for diversified cultures and religious practices, TSGH has instituted prayer rooms of different faiths, including Buddhism, Christian, and Catholic. The newly unveiled Muslim prayer room is aimed at offering Muslim immigrants, patients, caregivers, and students a place for worship as well as a peace of mind and spiritual consolation during their stay in TSGH.
