National Innovation Award is considered one of the most important indicators in demonstrating research & development capacity as well as innovation capability of healthcare institutions and enterprises in biotech industry of Taiwan. Tri-Service General Hospital has invested substantial resources to advancing medical technologies R&D initiatives. In the past 4 years (2016-2019), R&D efforts by TSGH medical teams have earned them 19 National Innovation Awards. The winning projects by TSGH teams include “Design and Application of an Innovative Plating System for High Tibial Osteotomy in Osteoarthritic Knee”, “Mass Casualty Incident Management Simulation System”, “Rapid and Precise Gene Screen for Hypokalemia with Gitelman Syndrome”, “Multifunctional Electronic Pulmonary Instrument”, and “3D Printing Assisted Novel Nuss Bar Designing Model”, among others. Solutions derived from medical R&D projects of TSGH teams have provided innovative clinical treatment models for patients and clinicians and increased quality and effectiveness of clinical teaching, with many medical R&D projects entering into the stage of substantive technology transfer such as “Rapid Identification of Klebsiella Pneumoniae Capsular Serotypes”, “Design and Application of an Innovative Plating System for High Tibial Osteotomy in Osteoarthritic Knee”, and “Virtual Neuro-Navigation in Reality Surgery”.

This year (2020), medical R&D and innovation projects of TSGH teams led by Dr. Ke- Hong, JIAN of Ophthalmology Department, Dr. Peng-Ren, CHEN of Gastroenterology Department, Professor An, CHEN of Pathology Department, and Director Yi-Xing, XIE of Dentistry Department won the 17th National Innovation Awards, after rigorous reviews by Research Center for Biotechnology and Medicine Policy (RBMP) professional reviewers.

Five TSGH medical R&D projects already won National Innovation Award in previous years were bestowed National Innovation Award-Renewal by Research Center for Biotechnology and Medicine Policy (RBMP) this year (2020). These five R&D projects were led by Superintendent Chih-Hung, WANG of Otolaryngology-Head & Neck Surgery Department, Dr. Shih- Hung, TSAI of Emergency Medicine Department, Dr. Ying- Hsin, CHEN of Emergency Medicine Department, Dr. Chi-Tun, TANG of Neurosurgery Department, and Nursing Supervisor Yu- Ling, PAN of Nursing Department.

The awarding ceremony for the 17th National Innovation Award was held in Taipei Nangang Exhibition Center, Hall 1 on December 1st of 2020. TSGH winning teams led by Major General WANG, Superintendent of TSGH were invited by organizing committee to receive their awards and honors during the awarding ceremony.
