In 1979, the Tri-Service General Hospital was affiliated under National Defense Medical Center as its teaching hospital. Since then, the Department of Ophthalmology was independent of the Department of Eye- Ear-Nose-Throat department and was administered by its first director, Dr. Dao-Xiang Zhou.

In 2001, director Dr. Cheng-Jong Chang actively expanded the equipment and facilities in the department, and introduced the latest instruments for surgical treatments at that time.

In 2004, director Dr. Da-Wen Lu focused on teaching method innovation, the combination of teaching and the Internet, and the improvements of administrative efficiency as his policies. With abundant teaching resources and excellent teaching environment and faculties, he re-planned the teaching program of medical students and residents, and put strong emphasis on academic strengthening in the department. He also invited well-known scholars around the world to give lectures, to broadening the essential academic ability of our colleagues and enhancing the interest and morale of research and development.

Since 2016, director Dr. Ming-Cheng Tai and his predecessor director Dr. Chang-Min Liang not only continued to introduce the most advanced surgical techniques and equipment in the field, and they also put great efforts in providing a more comprehensive medical care and high-quality medical environment for our patients. In doing so, serial of renovations were initiated and gradually reformed; the outpatient clinics had completely reformed in 2019, the Dry Eye Center and the Retina Center were also set up consecutively for taking care of specific patients, and in the near future, Refractive Center and Glaucoma Center will all be in service for patients in need.

Under the leadership of successive directors, a balanced development in clinical, teaching, and research of our Ophthalmology department was achieved and continued. Clinically, our department not only provide out-patient, in-patient and emergent medical services for military and police personnel, and general public here in Taipei; our doctors also support our branch hospitals all around Taiwan in Hualien, Taitung, and Penghu for local medical services. In terms of teaching, in addition to providing guidance to our medical students and graduate students, we also participate in teaching programs of inter-academic, inter-school, and international physicians; our department also actively participate in various international medical activities and co-organize events hosted by the Ophthalmological Society of Taiwan. In research, we have considerable experience and success in applying and participating in various research projects, and have great amount of high quality academic papers published. We also encourages our young attending physicians to actively cultivate their talents by participating in domestic and foreign doctoral programs for further study and further education, establishing in-depth research and development in various subspecialties, and enhancing the academic research atmosphere and clinical research volume in our department.
