Tri-Service General Hospital (TSGH) has in recent years been very active in medical R&D and innovation projects. Under leadership and support by Dr. Chien-Sung, TSAI, superintendent of TSGH, nursing teams led by Colonel KAO, director of TSGH Nursing Department have participated and competed in the 2020 International Innovation & Invention Competition co-sponsored by Chinese Innovation and Invention Society, Moscow International Inventions and Innovative Technology Salon«ARCHIMEDES» LLC “InnovExpo” (Moscow, Russia) and won one ARCHIMEDES Gold award with their “Draw Sheet-to Roll over, sit up, and reposition” patented innovation project and a ARCHIMEDES Silver Award with “Pestle and Spoon” patented invention. Innovation capability of TSGH medical teams are highlighted once again by winning big awards in international competition.

Innovation Project: “Draw Sheet-to Roll Over, Sit Up and Reposition” was bestowed Archimedes Gold Award (Inventor: CAPT. Zi-Ping, LUO, Director, Health Services Training Center, National Defense Medical Center; Ms. Yu-Ling, PAN, Nursing Supervisor, Nursing Dept., Tri-Service General Hospital)

The gold-award-winning patented repositionable draw sheet invented by CAPT. LUO and Ms. PAN is an innovative assistive device capable of replacing traditional devices such as sheets, slide sheets, or laborious manual patient movement and handling widely used in hospitals or nursing care facilities. The innovative repositionable draw sheet can be used to assist bed-bound patients to roll over, sit up, and reposition in a safe, convenient, easy, and ergonomic fashion while saving time and energy for nursing staffs or caregivers rendering care. The adjustable draw sheets can be tailor-made during the design phase to accommodate patients of different physical sizes, weights, and medical conditions, offering patients comfort while safeguarding occupational health of nursing staffs or caregivers.

Innovation Project: “Pestle and Spoon” was bestowed Archimedes Silver Award (Inventor: Ms. Si-Ying, WANG, Nursing Staff, Cardiovascular ICU, Tri-Service General Hospital)

The silver-award-winning patented “Pestle and Spoon” invention was designed to combine together the functionalities of a “pestle” and a “spoon” by innovating and inventing a silicon adapter which allow nursing staffs or clinicians to use either a pestle or a spoon on each end of the combined tool in a convenient and safe way. The adapter material is highly malleable and can be fixed with any pestle sizes. Because the adapter is not fixed in the center of pestle, it will not affect medical staffs’ habitual practices of putting their thumbs on the pestle and applying pressure when grinding medications. In average, the innovative “Pestle and Spoon” invention can save up to 33.9% of time for healthcare professionals when grinding medications for their patients. Not only will the innovative device save tremendous time and effort for nursing staffs, it also benefits patients by mitigating risks of spoon falling or misplacing, further contributing to patient safety and healthcare quality.
