Hypokalemia has the potential to cause sudden cardiac arrest. Due to its complex etiology, it can be misdiagnosed and delayed to treat. Our nephrology team has been working on this field of research for nearly 30 years and has solved many clinical dilemmas in the diagnosis of hypokalemia. According to the diagnostic algorithm by Professor Lin, we established several criteria to differentiate the various causes of hypokalemia, which has revised the diagnostic flowchart of the textbook “Harrison' Principles of Internal Medicine”.

Gitelman syndrome has high prevalence rate in Taiwan. We analyzed data from more than 176 Taiwanese people for 22 common mutation hotspots and created a screening panel. This panel significantly shortens the testing time for rapid genetic diagnosis and provides information on genetic consulting.

In recent years, we explored the research field of artificial intelligence-assisted quantification of blood potassium. The pioneered AI system can detect fatal hypokalemia or hyperkalemia, predict thyrotoxic periodic paralysis, and inspect clinical prognosis and therapeutic monitoring. With AI assisted critical alert system, a unique technology in the world, clinicians can diagnose the patient's potassium levels in real time of 15 seconds after the ECG is completed. In the future, it will be applied to Taipei City ambulances and wearable devices. In addition to patent in Taiwan, we are obtaining patent in the U.S.A. This technology has featuring on Discovery channel "Taiwan Revealed series: Biomedical Technology " previously.

In February 2022, the team won the "Golden Award" in the National Biotechnology and Medical Care Quality Award 2021 and the Symbol of National Quality Award for its complete diagnostic, therapeutic, and monitoring process of hypokalemia, with the theme of "Hypokalemia Precision Medicine: From Clinical to Genetic and Artificial Intelligence Medicine".
