In 1955 the radiotherapy unit was founded as a unit of the Department of Diagnostic Radiology, and was one of the few pioneering radiotherapy centers in Taiwan. It was not until 1968 when radiotherapy unit started to treat a significant number of cancer patients. In 1974 the small unit became an independent radiotherapy section. The radiotherapy section was further expanded in 1987 to the present Department of Radiation Oncology. At the spacious new site the Department is equipped with various new facilities and 30 highly qualified staff. The department is presently headed by Dr. Chao.
  The Department of Radiation Oncology provides comprehensive treatment for both military and civilian patients, including conventional external beam radiotherapy, 3-dimensional conformal radiotherapy, Intensity-Modulated Radiotherapy (IMRT), Volumetric Modulated Arc Therapy (VMAT) and the state-of-the-art Tomotherapy. Our department also performs stereotactic radiosurgery for intracranial lesions, as well as stereotactic radiotherapy for cancers of the trunk. We also provide intracavitary and interstitial brachytherapy.
  The Department of Radiation Oncology also serves as the Faculty of Radiation Oncology in the School of Medicine, National Defense Medical Center (NDMC). Apart from lecturing in classrooms, students from NDMC and other Medical Schools, as well as medical technology colleges have been regularly trained in the Department for clinical Radiotherapy and Oncology. Programs for rotating interns and residents are available for interested individuals in the field of radiation oncology. The Department is also involved with hospice care in the hospital.

  The Hospital is a research-oriented medical center, and our department has long been involved in researches of both clinical and basic nature, and the research combines both clinical and basic backgrounds. For the last few years the research interest has been focused on nasopharyngeal cancer, salivary gland sparing including a genetic program, radiation protection involving recombinant melanin, and genetic polymorphism.
