What is Oculoplastic Surgery?

Ophthalmic plastic and reconstructive surgery, oculoplastic surgery covers a wide range of problems around the eyes and face. It includes disorders of the eyelids, the lacrimal system, the eyeball, and eye socket. And also procedures which may rejuvenate or bring back a more youthful appearance to the eyes and face.

Eyelids

The eyelids are specialized structures that provide protection to the eyeball. The eyelids provide a cover for the eyeball. Also, the eyelids help keep the eyeball moist by rebuilding the eyeball's tear film with each blink. Many eyelid problems may be corrected with oculoplastic surgery.  Droopy eyelids (ptosis) may occur in small children or adults.  Retracted eyelids causing a staring or wide-eyed appearance may occur in thyroid related eye disease.  Baggy eyelids usually occur in the elderly.  Many people may also be bothered by eyelids that turn in towards the eye (entropion) or away from the eye (ectropion).  Skin cancers occurring on or around the eyelids may require oculoplastic surgery to remove the cancers and repair the lids.

Cosmetic Surgery

There are many techniques to bring a more youthful look to the eyes and face. Medications may be injected around wrinkled areas of the eyes and eyebrows to reduce or eliminate the wrinkles.  The entire face can be treated with a special type of laser to resurface the face and restore a more youthful appearance. Excessive skin and bags around the eyes may also be treated with laser or radiofrequency surgery to reduce or eliminate the extra tissue.
