Under the guidance of successive Director Generals of Medical Affairs Bureau (MAB) and superintendents of Tri-Service General Hospital (TSGH), TSGH integrated its experts from both transplant surgery and transplant professional clinical team in 2022 and subsequently established the Transplant Medicine Department. The newly established Department is dedicated to creating a comprehensive integrated transplant medical care environment and pioneering international transplant medicine. On March 13th, 2024, the hospital held the plaque unveiling ceremony for the "Transplant Specialty Ward," presided over by Lieutenant General TSAI Chien-Sung, Director General of Medical Affairs Bureau. TSGH Superintendent Dr. Hung Yi-Jen, Deputy Superintendents, medical professionals of the transplant team took part in the unveiling ceremony. Other distinguished guests including Chairman of the Organ Donation and Transplantation Registration Center, Mr. Lee Ming-Zhe, Mr. Liu Jia-Qi, and Senior Executive Officer Guo Wei-Chung from the Ministry of Health and Welfare were also invited to witness this historic moment.

Starting from 1986, TSGH has been actively advancing various organ transplant medical technologies, receiving multiple recognitions and certifications from the Ministry of Health and Welfare, including certifications of kidney transplantation in 1986, heart transplantation in 1988, corneal transplantation in 1999, liver transplantation in 2021, pancreas transplantation in 2015, and lung transplantation in 2022. It has also been accredited as a medical center capable of performing transplant surgeries for all five major organs in northern Taiwan.

In November 2003, TSGH established the Organ Donation and Transplantation Operations Review Committee in accordance with national public health and healthcare policy development to promote organ donation advocacy and transplantation services. In addition to promoting the circulation and public awareness of organ donation related information, it actively integrates various clinical and administrative units within the hospital to complete various promotion measures for organ solicitation and transplantation. Subsequently, with the maturity of various transplant medical knowledge and surgeries, the hospital established the Transplant Surgery Division in 2009 (under Surgery Department), specializing in the development and advancement of various transplant technologies. In 2013, the Ministry of Health and Welfare divided the area of responsibility of organ donation in Taiwan into four regions: North, Central, South, and East. TSGH's organ donation and transplantation team was selected to perform the duty as the chairman of the first North District Organ Donation Drive Network Hospitals, assisting in pushing forward of various organ donation and transplantation operations in the North District.

With the increasing types of organ solicitation drive and transplantation services and to serve more military personnel and civilians, TSGH integrated transplant surgery and various professional clinical teams in 2022 to establish the Transplant Medicine. Department The first Director of Transplant Medicine Department was Dr. Chen Deng-Wei, who was responsible for building the consensus and framework for the department's primary development, including creating an integrated transplant medical environment exclusively for transplant patients, setting up a transplant immunology laboratory, developing advanced basic immunology research, and establishing a dedicated transplant team to lay the foundation for the development of the Transplant Medicine Department. In December 2023, Dr. Ke Hong-Yan took over as the Director and further promoted the establishment of the transplant specialty ward, totaling 20 beds. It was the first in Taiwan to combine various organ transplant departments, such as cardiovascular surgery (heart transplantation), general surgery (liver and pancreas transplantation), urology (kidney transplantation), and thoracic surgery (lung transplantation). By establishing a dedicated Ward for patients receiving transplant surgeries, TSGH aims to concentrate medical resources to provide transplant patients with more meticulous professional care. In order to comfort and alleviate the anxiety of patients and their families during treatment, the overall space design of the specialty ward is based on comfort and security, allowing the ward to feel like home, helping patients and their families to receive medical care with peace of mind and stability, and obtain the highest quality transplant care.

To date, under the leadership and guidance of Lieutenant General Tsai Chien-Sung, Director General of Medical Affairs Bureau, and Major General Hung Yi-Jen, Superintendent of Tri-Service General Hospital, TSGH has so far successfully performed 258 cases of heart transplantation, 1 case of lung transplantation, 637 cases of liver transplantation, 383 cases of kidney transplantation, 1 case of pancreas transplantation, and 860 cases of corneal transplantation, all with excellent clinical outcomes post-surgery. The Transplant Medicine Department will continue to uphold the spirit of delivering life and great love, promote and advance the development of transplant medicine and the effectiveness of organ solicitation, benefit more patients, and become a stronghold of national and international transplant medicine.
