Since 2015, Tri-Service General Hospital has been cooperating with Nagasaki-Shi (Nagasaki City) Government in providing health screening and medical consultation services to Taiwanese survivors of atomic bomb radiation injury in the Second World War, with such cooperation relationship entering its fifth year since inception. Forty Taiwanese survivors who sustained radiation injury while studying in Japan during the Second World War are all in their eighties now. Guided by the credo of “treating patients as family; learning from patients as teachers; and engaging with patients as friends”, Tri-Service General Hospital has proactively cooperated with Nagasaki City Government since 2015 to provide health screening and medical consultation services to Taiwanese survivors of the Nagasaki atomic bomb attack in Japan during World War II. Health screening and medical consultation provided by TSGH was aimed at periodically monitor health conditions of those survivors and provide necessary medical services when necessary to ensure that those survivors can carry on daily life and maintain their living quality.
The annual health screening operations was held on March, 6th, 2019, with a team of five medical professionals and officials from Japan participating in the annual event, including superintendent/doctor Tomonaga Masao, Professor Sheftall of Shizuoka University, Hironori Fukae-san & Nishi Shouhei-san affiliated with the Nagasaki City Government. This year a total of 7 radiation injury Taiwanese survivors came to TSGH for the annual health screening services with the support and assistance by Dr. Wen-Hui, Fang, Director of International Medical Service Center, TSGH.
Medical staffs and government officials of Japan have expressed their heartfelt appreciations to their counterparts of Tri-Service General Hospital for their ongoing support and assistance in providing quality health screening services to the Taiwanese survivors. With mutual cooperation between TSGH and Nagasaki City Government since 2015, the Japanese delegation were deeply impressed by clinical expertise and compassionate care offered by TSGH medical team. The Japanese team hoped that in the future both parties can broaden and deepen such mutually beneficial cooperation and extend such cooperation onto different medical fields. Through the annual health screening program, the Japanese delegation also aimed to inform other radiation injury survivors that they can have the high quality healthcare services in TSGH via the partnership program between the military medical center and Nagasaki City Government.
