To ramp up the military medical center’s smart healthcare applications and services for patients as well as its medical staffs, Tri-Service General Hospital (TSGH) and Industrial Technology Research Institute (ITRI) signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) on cooperation regarding 5G mobile networks’ medical applications on April 25, 2019.

5G, the fifth generation cellular wireless technology, will offer massive connectivity power and super-fast transmission speed that may help transform how healthcare is delivered. 5G not only has the capacity to profoundly impact Internet of Medical Things (IoMT) ecosystem, it will also enable medical innovations via technological applications of augmented reality (AR), virtual reality (VR), mix reality (MR), artificial intelligence (AI), remote medical learning, remote patient monitoring, and more.

TSGH has always been quite active in clinical applications R&D of AI technologies, such as medical imaging interpretation. As a leading national technology R&D hub in Taiwan incubating more than 280 innovative companies, ITRI has played a pivotal role in transforming Taiwan's industries from labor-intensive modes into innovation-driven ones. ITRI has been focusing its R&D initiatives on the fields of smart living, quality health, and sustainable environment in recent years. Combining ITRI’s powerful 5G mobile networks technologies and their associated innovative healthcare service solutions with TSGH’s clinical expertise and medical R&D, the inked MOU between the two signatory parties is expected to resolve numerous challenges of ICT technology and in turn greatly benefit patients, medical staffs, and the broader medical communities in Taiwan.
